We Did It for the Patients

For our patients we were there, we learned caring not just care
We learned all about the human touch
We worked long into the night, cause the future seemed so bright
We were doing what we loved so much.

More than blackboards filled with chalk, our professors walked the talk
We were moved to see ideals could last
So compassionate and wise, they saw something in our eyes
We didn't know it, but the torch was passed.

And we did it for the patients, and they made our lives so real
And we did it for the patients, to teach, to treat, to heal.

We learned faith in human kindness, for to live is to believe
We learned when we serve our patients to give is to receive.

Now we're efficient and more proficient,
But that human touch has turned to frost
High tech's seductive, we're more productive,
Something's gained but there is something lost
What's the cost?

We loved medicine so pure, loved a pill that brought a cure
Loved the magic of a surgeon's knife
Loved the music of the wards, in our patients we heard chords
And we felt we were in tune with life.

Now we're robotic, care's idiotic, no time to call a patient by her name
We dare not scoff it, we'll lose our profit, because medicine's a brand new game
Not the same.

And we did it for the patients, took an oath to ease their pain
And we did it for the patients, and not for our own gain.

Since then 30 years have passed, our ideals, they didn't last
We went different ways, sought different goals
Patient care is where it's at
I can earn much more than that
In these times, what is a doctor's role?
Should we follow or lead?
Or get what we need?
Can we find our heart and soul?
